09. MARCHING BAND

We were always driving to some place
In the middle of the night or at the crack of dawn
And life was lived at such a pace
We had our conservations on the run
But shadows flicker in the headlight’s beam
Like ghosts in the road, like you and me
How can you be right by my side
So far away and out of time

I’m at the tail end of a marching band
With just a baton in my hands
And I can’t spin it and I can’t do tricks
I’m just a loser with a wooden stick

They put me in these feathers and sequins
But I’m too numb to rise to the occasion
The bells ring out and the girls they dance
But time stands still and I just can’t

We dreamt of building a big house
With music drifting from every window
Wouldn’t put your money with your mouth
Should have seen the signs, should have figured it out

So here we are, it’s the marching band
You’re at the front with a drum in your hands
And I dance to the rhythm that you set for me
But deep down we know that I long to be

Moving forwards and not keeping time
Your plans for the future are not the same as mine
